Norman Origin · From the Anglo-Norman ‘de Valle’
Wall descends from the Anglo-Norman de Valle — ‘of the valley’ — who arrived with the twelfth-century invasion and put down roots across Limerick, Waterford and Wexford. The name shortened over the centuries from de Valle to Wall, a common enough drift for Norman names that stayed put long enough.
Not every Norman name kept its French shape, or needed to — three centuries of Irish weather wore this one down to four letters.
Irish form: de Bhál
