THE NAME & ITS MEANING

The Hereditary Physicians

Mixed Origin · Multiple Gaelic roots

Tully carries more than one genuine root: Ó Maoltuile, ‘devotee of God's will’ (maol, ‘devotee’, and toile, ‘will’); Ó Taithligh, from a byname meaning ‘quiet’ or ‘peaceable’, mainly in Clare and Connacht; and, separately, tulach, ‘mound’ or ‘small hill’, as a place-name origin. The best-documented Tullys, the MacTullys, served as hereditary physicians to the O'Connors and O'Reillys across Roscommon, Galway and Cavan.

A name that answered to three different roots and one very specific medieval profession — proof that not every surname needs a single tidy story to be a real one.
