Gaelic Origin · Root meaning unknown
Slattery comes from Ó Slatara, a name of the Dál gCais heartland in County Clare. Its root has never been convincingly explained — later guesses have never been more than guesses, and the honest answer is that its original sense is lost.
Not every name comes with a tidy translation, and this is one of them — a family history certain enough, a word origin that isn't, and no reason to pretend otherwise.
Irish form: Ó Slatara
