Norman-Welsh Origin · From Prendergast, Pembrokeshire
Prendergast takes its name from a place in Pembrokeshire, Wales, home to Maurice de Prendergast, one of the very first Norman knights to land in Ireland in 1169. Within a few years Maurice had switched sides, fighting alongside the Irish he'd been sent to conquer — an early sign of how thoroughly some Norman families would go native.
A name that changed sides within a decade of arriving — the earliest example, in this library, of a Norman name becoming an Irish one by choice rather than by centuries of slow drift.
