Gaelic Origin · Root meaning ‘go-between’ or ‘intermediary’
O'Driscoll is built from eadarscál, ‘go-between’ or ‘intermediary’, read as Ó hEidirsceoil. The Ó hEidirsceoil were chieftains of Corca Laoidhe, ruling the coastline and islands around Baltimore and Skibbereen in West Cork, with a chain of castles guarding the harbours they commanded by sea.
A name earned on the water — the O'Driscolls held their stretch of Atlantic coast by ship and castle long after most Gaelic lordships had fallen further inland.
Irish form: Ó hEidirsceoil
