Gaelic Origin · Root meaning ‘hound, dog’
Madden comes from Ó Madadháin, a diminutive of madadh, ‘hound’ or ‘dog’ — in the same warrior-naming tradition as Concannon. The family ruled Síol Anmchadha, territory in south-east Galway near the Shannon, proud enough of the comparison to a hound that Gaelic Ireland's warriors rarely shied from it.
Another Gaelic name proud to call its ancestor a hound — Ireland's warriors were rarely shy about the comparison.
Irish form: Ó Madadháin
