Norman Origin · Root name Jorz
Family tradition traces Joyce to Thomas de Jorz, a Norman-Welsh knight said to have arrived in Connacht in the thirteenth century and married into the Ó Flaithbheartaigh (O'Flaherty) lordship of the west. His descendants settled the rugged country between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask.
Most Norman families who took Irish land kept a Norman name for it. The Joyces gave their own name to the land instead — Joyce Country, still called that today.
