Gaelic Origin · Root meaning uncertain, possibly ‘sea’
Hurley comes from Ó Muirthile, likely built on muir (‘sea’) combined with a second element scholars still debate. The family were established in west Cork, in the same broad stretch of country as several other Munster septs.
Better to say plainly that the second half of this name has never been pinned down than to invent a tidy meaning it may not have.
