THE NAME & ITS MEANING

Of Tullaghrin

Gaelic Origin · Root meaning ‘blue’

Gorman anglicises Mac Gormáin, built directly on gorm, ‘blue’. The family were chiefs of Tullaghrin in County Clare, a territory spanning the baronies of Moyarta and Ibrickane. The Mac prefix itself grew rare through the nineteenth century, when many Gaelic families dropped it under pressure to anglicise — some settling on the plain form Gorman, others taking up O'Gorman instead, and both remain in use by real families today.

One colour, one corner of Clare, and two different prefixes depending on which branch of the family you're asking.

Irish form: Mac Gormáin
