Norman-English Origin · From the word ‘furlong’
Furlong takes its name directly from the English unit of land measurement, likely marking an early ancestor's landholding. The family arrived among the first Norman settlers in County Wexford in the twelfth century and never fully Gaelicised, unlike so many of the names that landed alongside it.
Most Norman names that stayed in Ireland eight centuries picked up an Irish form somewhere along the way. This one never did — and is no less Wexford for it.
