Gaelic Origin · Root name from dún, ‘fort’
Dowling comes from Ó Dúnlaing, built on dún, ‘fort’. The family were one of the Seven Septs of Laois, a group of Gaelic families forcibly transplanted to Kerry in 1609 to clear their homeland for English settlers.
A name whose own history is a forced move — and the fact that it survives at all, in Laois and in Kerry both, says something about what a plantation could and couldn't erase.
Irish form: Ó Dúnlaing
