Gaelic Origin · Root meaning ‘brown chieftain, brown lord’
Donovan is built from donn (‘brown’ or, by extension, ‘noble’) and dubhán, read together as ‘brown chieftain’. Originally settled near the Limerick-Cork border, the Ó Donnabháin were driven further into West Cork after the Norman invasion, where they rebuilt their lordship around Castledonovan and Skibbereen.
A name pushed off its first ground and onto new ground it then held for eight hundred years — displacement, in the end, that the family simply outlasted.
Irish form: Ó Donnabháin
