Gaelic Origin · Root meaning ‘proud, haughty’
Dempsey comes from Ó Díomasaigh, built on díomas, ‘pride’. The family ruled Clanmalier, a territory straddling the Laois-Offaly border, and held their ground through some of the fiercest resistance to the Tudor plantations in the midlands.
A name that wears its own reputation on its sleeve — pride enough to survive two centuries of plantation warfare.
Irish form: Ó Díomasaigh
