Gaelic Origin · Root meaning ‘hard warrior’
Crowley comes from Ó Cruadhlaoich, joining cruadh (‘hard’) with laoch (‘warrior’, ‘hero’). The family rose to prominence in west Cork relatively late by Gaelic standards, in the wake of the Anglo-Norman invasion, and became one of the most numerous names in the county.
A name that means exactly what it says, worn by more Cork families today than almost any other of Gaelic origin.
Irish form: Ó Cruadhlaoich
