Gaelic Origin · Root meaning ‘victorious’
Cosgrove comes from Ó Coscraigh, built on coscrach, ‘victorious’ or ‘triumphant’. The family were established across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon, scattered widely enough that no single stronghold ever came to define the name the way a walled town or a barony does for some of its neighbours.
A name that carried its own good omen for eight centuries before a bearer of it, W.T. Cosgrave, became head of the first government of an independent Ireland in 1922.
Irish form: Ó Coscraigh
