Gaelic Origin · Root meaning disputed
Brady's root, Brádach, isn't settled with confidence — ‘spirited’ or ‘broad’ are both proposed, and neither is certain. What is certain is the sept's home: East Breifne, in County Cavan, where the Mac Brádaigh held land and, in later centuries, produced bishops of Kilmore.
A name honest enough to admit its own meaning is still argued over, in exactly the same way Gallagher's is — while never once losing its grip on Cavan.
