Mixed Origin · Root meaning disputed
Boyle most often descends from Ó Baoighill, whose root meaning is genuinely unsettled — ‘vain pledge’ and simply an old personal name are both proposed. The sept held territory in Donegal's Tirconnell, one of the ‘Fifth Bloods’ powerful enough to contest the O'Donnells themselves. Separately, an Anglo-Norman de Boyle family arrived later and, through Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork, built one of Ireland's great fortunes.
Two entirely different roads to the same name — one a Donegal warband, the other a self-made Munster earl, neither one the fake version of the other.
Irish form: Ó Baoighill
