English Origin · Root meaning ‘abbot’
Abbott is an English name rather than a Gaelic one, and the honest version says so. It comes from abbat, the head of a monastery, given either to someone in an abbot's household or, drily, to someone thought to carry himself like one. It reached Ireland with medieval settlement and is recorded in Dublin from the fourteenth century.
No sept and no Irish original — but seven hundred years in Leinster is a long enough tenancy to call the place home.
