Limerick — The Treaty City

Limerick takes its name from Luimneach, and its city has stood on the Shannon since Viking times, guarding the river’s tidal reach into the heart of Munster.

This is the Treaty City, named for the Treaty of Limerick signed in 1691 on the great limestone Treaty Stone that still stands by the river, ending a war and beginning the long story of Ireland’s Wild Geese abroad.
