Fermanagh takes its name from Fear Manach, ‘men of Manach’, a county so thoroughly shaped by water that Upper and Lower Lough Erne together fill nearly a third of it.
This was the stronghold of the Maguire chieftains, who ruled these lakelands from their island crannogs for three hundred years, and of the monks of Devenish Island, whose round tower still stands watch over the Erne.
